the illusory mirage of the “new” above all else.  Waller deliberately places herself within this tradition, and in doing so attempts to engage, and process, her historical betters.  The net of influence is wide, yet appropriate to our late moment. There are echoes of the recent past, and passages in the work which point to an awareness, and appreciation for artists as diverse as Guston, Thiebaud, Richter, and Currin.  No real attempt to appear of-the- moment is evident, which in its own way, is perhaps new, if not at least refreshing.

“One Item or Less: Recent Paintings by Greta Waller” will be up at the David Salow Gallery through May 2nd.
